Mélange Theater
The Mélange Theatre events are opportunities for students to showcase assorted classroom efforts as well as perform HYSA Performance Outreach Program productions for peers.
Oral Traditions & Oral Interpretive Theatre
provide an opportunity to strengthen literacy skills and promote multi-cultural awareness. With an emphasis on synergetic storytelling methods, students develop and perform original folktales and myths. The students' original work culminates in a performance experience. |

"While in a full scale play you are working to show the interactions between multiple characters and how these interactions fulfill a story, a monologue is different. In a monologue, the objective is to understand a given character's goals, emotions and thoughts. With limited blocking and no dialogue to establish these areas, a performer is presented with an exciting and unique challenge to exercise their talent. "
-- Brett Cohen "This serves as a way for me to show my knowledge and passion for theatre, while challenging me and taking me to a new level. Not only will it be academically beneficial, but it will prove to myself and others my devotion to the wonderful art that has so significantly impacted my life." -- Sam Shapiro
"When doing a full-scale play you have other actors to support you -- if you stumble on a line or miss a cue. However, while doing a monologue if you mess up a sentence or skip a short stanza, you have to figure it out yourself. You alone are the one conveying the message to the audience in the best way you can." -- Haley Ziesemer

"The word theatre comes from the Greeks.
It means the seeing place. It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation." -- Stella Adler "Another factor in my choice of this monologue is the main character, Emily. Emily is a cheerleader who, like all of her friends, is extremely interested in relationships with the boys at her school. What I found most interesting was the subversion the play and character present when the main character finally achieves her desire, and, instead of becoming more popular and happy, ends up pregnant. The way Emily handled her situation, and the symbolic use of the monologue’s titular pink rabbit are unique, and finalized my decision to perform this monologue." -- Grace Ruiz

Traditionally, people have gathered around a fire for survival and for fellowship. Thus, this was the customary setting for many cultures' first stories. The tellers of these tales were held in high esteem as they offered entertainment, enlightenment, and enrichment.
In the Spring 2014 Mélange Theater event, "Gather 'Round the Flame," the HYSA Oral Traditions and Oral Interpretive Theatre class shared their original myths, folktales, and epic narratives to illustrate the hidden truths and cultural legacies found within our lore. |
