"Poetry is the universal language of mankind."
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Poetry Out Loud was developed through a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. While it fulfills NCTE English Language Arts Standards, it also enhances students' speaking skills, self-confidence, and knowledge of their literary heritage.
Each winner at the state level receives $200 and an all expense paid trip with an adult chaperone to Washington D.C. to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school receives a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for his or her school library. A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is awarded annually at the National Finals.
The Poetry Out Loud Competition uses a pyramid structure. At the State and National Levels there are three tiers of competition. At the school level a two tier approach may be applied.

"William Shakespeare was the man who of all modern, and perhaps ancient poets,
had the largest and most comprehensive soul." - John Dryden
Nearly thirty years ago, the ESU National Shakespeare Competition had its first contest. Since that time over a quarter of a million students have competed in the competition. The NSC is a performance based educational program. It is designed to offer high school students the opportunity to read, analyze, and perform Shakespearean monologues and sonnets before diverse audiences.
The contest is divided into four tiers. The school winner and alternate will advance to the State level to compete in February. In April, all State winners go on to perform at Lincoln Center in New York City. From those fifty performers seven will be chosen to compete before a select group of international judges who will determine which student will win a scholarship to study Shakespeare and acting in England.
