HYSA Student Showcase Event
"This is an invaluable experience for my child."
The HYSA Student Showcase Event is a celebration and a collaborative realization of the inspired achievement of the Herberger Young Scholars Academy's student body. This biannual performance and gallery occasion uniquely displays HYSA students putting into practice the performance and intellectual acumen they have acquired in varied disciplines through the investment of their time and effort. |

"I was tremendously impressed by the courage of both the director and the students because of their deep exploration of the human experience as evidenced in the theatrical performances. Theater is a medium in which the performer must acquire an intimate understanding of the psychological impact of the events that have taken place before and during the character’s experience being shared on stage. Therefore, if what ASU President Michael M. Crow told students at last year’s HYSA graduation ceremony is true; that the most valuable asset their generation can have is empathy, then I can’t imagine a more valuable academic tool for these students to complete their education than the quality of theatrical
performance I enjoyed at the showcase." -- Christina Surrano, HYSA Parent of Secondary One Student "We absolutely loved the Herberger Student Showcase!
The students' performances were so well acted and thought provoking. Integrating the various subjects of STEM within the theatrical realm allowed students to make connections between disparate fields of study that promote deeper understanding. We are looking forward to what the next showcase unveils!" -- Suzanne Martinson, HYSA Parent of Wave Three Student |

"My daughter and I spent the entire day at the showcase and I was so honored to be able to see what all of the talented kids were able to achieve. We loved the musical performance and all of the displays, however, I was particularly impressed with the theatrical performances. I just want to applaud all of the performers. It takes a courage and bravery to get in front of your peers and share a piece of yourself and they all did it with such skill and confidence. " -- Rayco Branch, HYSA Parent of Secondary One Student
"The entire Showcase presentation was absolute amazing and every student performed with such talent that it was hard to believe they weren't professionals! It's apparent that a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work went into this project by both the adults and the children involved. The Giving Tree was equally as remarkable as the Shakespeare production and much credit to the director!"
-- Adele Grosso, HYSA Parent of Wave Five and Two Students |
"The Giving Tree was delightful. The deep bonds that the HYSA students make with each other, that go beyond Academics, is evident when viewing how the actors interact with each other on and off stage. The homemade colorful costumes, minimal props and the doing of each other's makeup is part of the simple charm approach we so enjoy. For those who live in a world of "higher level thinking" all I can say is that it's ok to "play" and make believe at HYSA! It has amazed us over the last three years of having children in the drama program, how the instructor is able to convey the essence of classical literature and mature themes to students of this age, particularly in dealing with Shakespeare."

"The entire event was spectacular. I loved the student projects, the student performances, and the overall quality of the event. I can't believe these are elementary and middle school aged kids."
